How to Efficiently Heat Your Pool

Maintaining a pool can be difficult – all the cleaning, mixing chemicals and miscellaneous maintenance can overwhelm any busy homeowner. Because of all the responsibility, most people don’t stop to think of all the energy-saving opportunities available to them. And no function of your pool earns back more savings than an efficient approach to heating.  With just a few simple tips, you’ll save a ton every summer. Here’s how to do it:

Cover your pool as much as possible

One of the best ways to use a pool water heater less and get more savings is to cover your pool. Your pool cover will keep heat in and save up to 50 to 70 percent on energy costs. Pool covers also minimize evaporation which saves water by reducing the amount needed to pour into the pool by 30 to 50 percent. Homeowners can choose from a wide variety of cover materials including bubble, vinyl, and insulated vinyl.

Buy an energy efficient pool heater

If you still use a heater, make sure you purchased an energy efficient one. Usually, if you have a heater that is more than five years old, it is not nearly as efficient as a new version. Also, you want to make sure you do your research and determine that the heater you have purchased is designed to heat pools around the size of the one you own.

Use a heat pump instead

Rather than use gas or propane like most pool heaters, a heat pump uses electricity. Heat pumps are efficient as long as the outside temperature stays above 45 degrees. Although heat pumps usually cost more than gas or propane pool heaters, you’ll earn back more on annual operating expenses and more than justify the upfront price increase. And with proper maintenance, heat pumps can last longer than pool heaters.
